Should I speak to him

So 3 years ago I went out with this guy (it wasn't serious) and I broke up with him because I wasn't ready for a boyfriend and I've liked him ever since we don't speak much but when we do I go home thinking about it even if it's just "hi" everyone in the school knows we went out and they joke about it and they made it awkward I want to spend more time with him now because he said to my friend that he Isnt sure if he likes me. Am I getting my hopes up? Hi do i speak to him? (I'm really shy)
