Would you rather have a obgyn or a midwife?

This is my first baby, so trying to see what everyone prefers! 😊

Whenever my body gets prego I'm going with a mid wife and doula.. I had my first all natural at the hospital and I hated it.. I will be doing a home birth this time around.. It's just a personal choice.

Midwife all the way. I see a midwife for my well woman's exams and birth control, and my experience with her is just overall far better than when I went to see a gynecologist.

I just want to clear up this misunderstanding that no midwives are doctors. I've been to two midwives from the same practice and they're both doctors with medical degrees from great schools.

For the most part, midwives support natural birrh wheras many OB's see birth as an accident waiting to happen. I think OB's best serve women who are high risk. THAT is when their expertise is invaluable. But for normal pregnancies it is better to go with midwives.

Midwife all the way. Seriously. I had a natural hospital birth with OB care with my first, and now with a midwife I truly feel "THIS is the way prenatal care should be."  I ALWAYS see my midwife, for the full 45-60 min appointment time, instead of waiting on my over-booked OB for an hour and seeing him for less than 10 minutes. The care is more centered around "how can we fix your issues in a healthy non intrusive way?" instead of "here is a prescription."  I know the kind of birth I want, and how I want my daughter treated right after she's born, and my midwife will facilitate that. 
I would watch "The Business of Being Born." It's on Netflix and shows you the dangers of having a non-high risk pregnancy with an OB in a hospital. There are risks with a midwife too I'm sure, but I will never go back to an OB. And to me personally being "a doctor" isn't superior in this case. Hospitals have lots of liability rules regarding LD which OBs have to follow (like no eating or drinking in labor, you have to wear multiple monitors and possibly get an IV which means you have limited mobility, etc). And ask your OB how many totally natural, non intrusive births they've done. Most never saw any even in their medical school. They're trained to see pregnancy as an emergency which must be fixed and they know more about interventions, tools and drugs to use than just letting the body do its thing. As you can tell I could go on and on. 😜

My doctor group had midwives supported by the obgyns, and I saw the midwives throughout my first pregnancy, and I'll see them as long as everything goes well with this one since it's twins. The hospital I will deliver at always has midwives and obgyns from my doctors group on rotation. Which is why I met all the midwives, and it just worked out that the one I saw for my pregnancy class was the one who delivered my son.

I liked it though because I got to know everybody in my doctor group and I was confident in them all. My mom had a dedicated OBGYN who was on vacation when she delivered my brother so she ended up with some stranger doctor.

I think the best thing to do is look for doctor groups who participate in your insurance plan, who have both obgyns and midwives, and then make sure they service the hospital you want to deliver at. Then you can see the midwives and know they'll be able to bring in an OBGYN you can familiarize yourself with if you need one.

I used a midwife....i would never do they again. She made some mistakes that i don't think a obgyn would have😉 using a obgyn this time, just my personal opinion 😊

I would never use a midwife without being in a birthing center and/or hospital with medical care in the immediate vicinity. I had a good friend pass away after her midwife failed her. She was having complications during birth and the midwife did not get her to the hospital with enough time to spare. She bled out and the baby was left in the nicu with severe complications for 2 months. The doctors said if she would have been in the hospital they could have controlled the bleeding and given blood transfusions to save her. They also said if the midwife would have gotten her to the hospital sooner they could have had a better chance at saving her.
