Employer “did away” with maternity leave
So I am the Director of Marketing at an engineering firm and also the first woman employed who needed maternity leave. When I was having my first we negotiated and great plan that worked for both of us. Well I announced that I’m pregnant again (10 weeks) and he held a meeting with me to tell me he no longer will he offering maternity leave. He said he will allow me to take two weeks unpaid at home but expects me back after. There are less than 50 employees so there isn’t many laws to protect me. I’ve been applying for other jobs and praying something bites AND that they will be understanding to me needing a paid leave. This can be financially devastating to my family if I have to take 6 weeks unpaid. I’m trying not to stress and put my faith in God, but I can’t help it.
**added**
My original contract for maternity leave allowed two weeks paid and then two months working from home as I recovered and got use to things. I assumed it would be the same for this baby since we had a signed agreement in place. Today he just said he would no honor that plan any more because the men in the office didn’t think it was fair that they can’t work from home. I’m the only female in the office. If I had known the policy was going to change, we wouldn’t have tried for a baby until I was with a company that had a policy that worked for us. Making this huge change right after I announce to him is what makes it so stressful.
