(FTM) Should I Really Go In As Soon As Water Breaks?

Question

Depending on how long I’m in labor before my water breaks, is it really best to go to the hospital the minute it breaks? Since most first time moms have the longest labors. I’m planing on laboring at home as long as possible because I do want a natural birth but I’m not trying to labor for 20 hours at the hospital just because I went in as soon as my water breaks. What’s the “longest” you can wait?

It really depends on what your body is doing around the time your water breaks. If you are having organized contractions that are increasing in frequency and duration, not the worst idea to head to the hospital. 
If you aren’t contracting regularly, and you are comfortable, you can choose to stay home for a while. You’ll just need to monitor yourself for signs of infection. 
Everyone is different, my water broke, and I didn’t have any contractions. They sent me home until the next morning,and then gave me meds to start my contractions. It was another 24 hours before I delivered.
When it happens, trust your instincts, you’ll know what to do. I found that the best birth plan was just doing what felt best in the moment.

First, less than half of women have their water break naturally, so don't stress it too much. That being said, with my first, mine did break and popped like a balloon! I called the doc, then took my time with a shower and hair and makeup. By the time I waddled in, I was 4 cm dilated and ready for my epidural!

You need to call your dr when it breaks. Each dr has their own time limit for allowing a women to have broken water since its an infection risk.... my dr wanted to be notified but he also wanted us delivered  before 24 hours.. luckily once mine broke,  it was just 6 hours later when she was born...

I went in immediately, my contractions were never consistent before it broke. Once my water broke, I had full blown contractions and if i would have waited to go in, the ambulance would have been coming to get me because my contractions couldn’t even be read on the charts they were that high. It’s like my body couldn’t move. I didn’t have 2-3 mins between contractions. It was one after another so my body couldn’t function right when it came to moving around!

You should call your doc to give them a heads up, but it's best to labor at home in a comfortable environment for a while if you can. Women are typically told to follow the 5-1-1 rule. That means to go in when the contractions are 5 mins apart, 1 min long, and have been consistent for 1 hour. You can always go in earlier if you want, so they can check you. That's just the general rule of thumb.
