RSV??

Question

What are some beginning symptoms? My son woke up with a runny nose and watery eyes. He’s very congested sounding and is breathing out of his mouth. I’m thinking/hoping it’s just a head cold but of course I looked up symptoms and now I’m scared it could be the start. He doesn’t have a fever either, yet that is.

We were just hospitalized for RSV this past weekend. Never had a fever but had all the cold symptoms. Progressively her cold got so bad we went to the ER. Here are a few things that made us go in. I would look for signs for dehydration. Our little one wasn’t able to keep food down and couldn’t really breath when she ate so she couldn’t really eat and when she did she coughed so hard she would throw it up. Lack of wet diapers was another sign. Another thing we noticed was her rapid heavy breathing, lack of activity and skin color showed signs of lack of oxygen. She was very sleepy and looked super pale. But the most important sign to look for with a respiratory distress is retraction in the rib cage when breathing. Look it up on YouTube to watch signs in a baby. It was scary, but after a night at Children’s with nose industrial strength suction, fluids and oxygen she was much better. I was a wreck but she was a trooper and made it through. Hope you don’t have to experience it.

When my guy had RSV - the major symptom was a fever, he actually had mild congestion. I’m sure it can look different, but without a fever I wouldn’t be as worried. Try baths and a humidifier to clear up congestion.

It starts pretty much like any other cold/respiratory illness.  Our son had a fever and a runny nose.
Our son is nine now, but I think when he had it the nasty cough didn’t set in until a few days after the initial symptoms.
That being said, try not to worry (easier said than done...I know).  I think I read somewhere that only 1/3 of babies that have RSV will get the really nasty symptoms - so the odds are in your favor.
I hope this is just a cold and your baby feels better soon.
