1st time with no guarantee of even getting the procedure

Feeling very nervous... the last year and a half we’ve been at our local fertility clinic trying to understand my husbands extreme sperm fluctuations and low speed count. He started off at 20 million, then went to 14, then to 7, at which point the urologist put him on clomid to help increase the count. He was on this for 6 months and provided another sample. His sperm count plummeted to 1 million, And we were urged to pay $700 to freeze it. The doctors insisted the clomid and his ADHD meds had nothing to do with his sperm count and only 2% of men experience a sperm drop from these meds. So, we took matters into our own hands and he went off all meds, and he scheduled another test 6 weeks later, and that test was 8 million. We were thrilled because I felt validated that his meds were the culprit, and wanted one more test to show our doc it was trending up for IUI. Last Friday his sperm count dropped down to 4 million, I legit had a breakdown in the doc office. He had the flu in between the 8million count test and the 4million and our fertility doctor said that could definitely affect his count. However, it’s been a year and a half of us going back and forth for multiple sperm tests to see if we can get to that magic IUI # and understand his baseline sperm count and we still have 0 answers. I feel so defeated. The doctor said we could pay to do IUI regardless, but the risk being I start the medication and go through the whole process, and my husbands sample not have enough sperm to do the actual procedure since his count fluctuates so much. With my name coming up on the funded IVF list in May/June I at least want to try a round or two of IUI before we go that route. I’m hoping it was the flu that tanked his sperm count in December, and that enough time will pass for it to come back up the end of February when I start the process. So for the next3-4 weeks we are on a detox, I’m making him eat all the food that is supposed to be good for sperm, and hoping that I’m not going through all of this to be told the day of there isn’t enough and waste the money as well. Has anyone been in this position?
