Why did he leave me on read?

This guy ive known since I was little. He is cousins one of my friends that I’ve been friends with since like 2nd grade& I’ve been close to. Anyway he started messaging me because we go to the same college. He always messaged first and asked for my number and showed interest in many ways. I didn’t give him my number because I’m cautious and insecure so he just gave me his. I brushed it off and never texted his number and kept messaging him on ig. Like the next day he left me on read. But I couldn’t bring myself to do anything so I just did nothing. I didnttext his number and I didn’t double text him. It was random too we were in the middle of talking about a movie. Then I recently noticed that he unfollowed me and my sister. Did he do this because he was insecure that I didn’t send signals that I was interested and didnt give him my number or why?
