What do you do in this situation?

Question

So I recently learned some information
about my childhood and wondered
what others would do in the same
situation. A good friend of my mothers
had gone on a camping trip with us
when we were kids. My mom was
doing drugs the entire time we were
there but her friend didn't notice until
she over did it the day we were
leaving. My mom was going to drive us
home despite the fact that she was far
too high to drive. Her friend ended up
driving us all home and then told my
dad about what happened. My dad
ended up forcefully putting my mom in
to rehab shortly after. If you were in a situation like this with a friend of yours, how would you have handled this? 
*it wouldn’t let me edit and I wasn’t asking what I should do but whether or not you would have handled this situation the same way my mothers friend did.

What her friend did. Told the spouse and got her into rehab. Police and child services aren’t going to do anything, they can’t arrest someone based on the intent to drive impaired. And even sending child services to her house won’t do anything. Not from my experience. I’d want her to get help.

If I were your mother’s friend I would have reported her to the police and called child services right there and then.

I use to have a friend. She became a heroine addict. She visited me one day, shot up in my bathroom with her 4 yr old there with us. I went straight to the room she was staying in and took her keys. She proceeded to yell and what not and had the audacity to put her hands on me. I called her parents to come get her child. Then kicked her out.

I would have done the same. Take the keys away, and alert her adult family members. The police aren’t going to do anything helpful. 
Depending on circumstances I may have also called the mandated reporter hotline to alert protective services.

Honestly if someone tried to drive under the influence with their kids I’d call the police. It was lucky that the friend was there but I couldn’t count on someone always stepping in and I could never forgive myself if any kids were harmed due to drug or alcohol use.

Make sure she went to rehab. Jail isn’t a place for addicts, it’s a place for people who meant harm. Addicts are addicted and don’t realize what they are doing most the time. Calling the cops on someone who is addicted to drugs is probably the worst thing for them.

I probably would have done the same thing your moms friend did. Maybe called the police. It reminds of a situation my brother in law was telling us about recently. He was bar tending on New Year’s Eve this year and there was a couple he’s known for a long time with their toddler apparently getting hammered. According to him taking shots and partying hard while their toddler ran around the bar in pajamas. He said when the bar closed they just packed up their kid in their car and went home. I was appalled my BIL didn’t stop them from driving drunk with their child.

I would have done the same in order to get the children safely back to the other parent, if like in your case the father got the mother help then I would leave it there, if he didn't do anything I would definitely involve child services and possibly the police depending on how much immediate danger the kids are in.

I would do exactly that and if she didn’t go to rehab, I would report her for child endangerment

If the spouse was sober and trustworthy, I would not see a reason to get child services involved. If they were using as well or something else I would have also tried to reach out to cps or someone who could help/check in legally.
