So the other day I was sitting at a McDonald’s working on my art and having a conversation with 2 African American 8 year old girls. They asked me if I spoke any other language I told them spanish was my first language and so they proceeded to tell me they learned some spanish in school. They counted in spanish and told me the colors they were taught in spanish. “Black is Noir.” I looked at them and said no that is in french. Who told you that was spanish. “Our teacher said to say Noir instead of the other word.” Then I realized..... 😕 I’m just thinking how have we come to this. We teach our children not to say negro, although it is the proper way to say black (the color) in spanish.

Is it silly to replace a word from another language simply because it sounds bad in English?
