Is age an excuse?

On this app and other situations, I see a lot of complaints about people's parents or in laws giving outdated advice concerning babies. It will be bad advice and sometimes dangerous advice, like putting whiskey on gums or starting solids at 2 months old. There will usually be a few responses from people saying to let it go, and it's because it's age related and what they were told was okay during their time as parents. It's excused. I've never agreed with this excuse, because people this age, and all people, have the same access to information as new parents do. I see it concerning other things as well. Most extremely, racism and bigotry. People's grandparents or great grandparents will drop the N word or call them "colored folks", or make phobic remarks against gay people. Some people excuse this as well, saying in their time it was normal and to just look past it. I don't think we should look past these things, regardless of someone's age. Even if someone is 85 years old, if they call someone a n*****, or a f**, or if they told a new mom to let her baby cry all night in a locked bedroom after adding whiskey to their bottle, I think they should be called out and corrected. I don't think age is an excuse. We all have access to information to learn and grow no matter our age.

Do you think age is an excuse to be ignorant about things like babies, children, relationships, etc.? What about more extreme things, like racism?
