Its not bad to hold back a child at any grade if they are not ready. Its actually bad to let them continue on KNOWING its just going to get harder, youre setting them up to fail. They may not understand and be upset, but they will get it when they get older.

I would rather hold them back now than later, when they’re more aware of what that means socially.

Do it now when the kids don’t notice. Keep in mind it’s a snowball effect. It will get harder to close the gap and get him/her caught up the older she gets. I could get on my teacher pedestal but I won’t. It is okay to hold them back if they need it. It’s so hard for a parent but it will help your child in the long run. Your child might be young for their age and blend better with being held back OR another year in first will build their confidence and help them grow.

Holding students back can be helpful if there isn’t an underlying condition causing the struggle.. Learning disabilities are fairly common(1 in 5 children have dyslexia) and holding these students back is not always in their best interest—unless they are going to be retaught in a way that better suits their needs. I think it’s important to find out why a child is struggling... Public schools are required to evaluate for learning disabilities if the parents/guardians have concerns, even if students attend private school. Evaluations can tell whether a student has a disability or not, and will also determine their strengths and weaknesses. If no learning disability is found then retention may be a good decision... If there is a learning disability, then there are a lot of resources available to help a student improve.

I think it depends on why they aren’t doing as well as they should. I’ll use my son as an example he has reading learning disabilities so education wise he will probably always be behind and will always need some extra help but socially and maturity wise he is the same as his peers so it would be a disservice to hold him back

teacher here—Research indicates that retention is almost never a good idea. Find some intervention to help him/her catch up (tutor, school-based academic intervention, etc.)

Help them with a tutor and provide outside activities that can help them. Being left back isn’t the answer because if they didn’t figure out the first time what makes you think they will the second time. It’s all about how we learn there is different ways. Some kids just need a little bit more attention with explaining things. Take the time to help them
