Both of my husband's parents got Alzheimer's / dementia my mother-in-law got Alzheimer's first And in a months she didn't even know who anybody was not even her own husband .and because my father-in-law was too proud to ask for help and nearly killed on being a caretaker for her!  You cannot judge somebody until  you're in their shoes! I know what this disease does first hand and is extremely hard! I mean he could have put her into a home and never seen her!

So I know the instinct is that this is totally crazy, and I'm not sure many would actually be able to do it, but in other ways in seems brilliant.
Like, if you approach it like polyamory, then it's something you and your partner did together, a relationship you both had (in different ways) with a third person. Then it's less like you're being replaced, and more like there's another person there you can trust to support the person you loved. Second, you get to have a relationship with the girlfriend, and when you're gone, she will have known you, and get to grieve you, instead of being in your shadow. ANd for the husband, the person you're in a relationship with will share the memory of the love you had, will have been a witness to it, and will understand. And then you won't feel like you're replacing her, either.
