Cultural appropriation nursery?
My SIL is pregnant with a girl and the theme of her nursery is boho/tribal. I really didn’t think anything of it and told her it sounded cute as she explained the color scheme, decor of teepees, feathers, arrows, even a dreamcatcher.
Over the weekend I attended a bridal shower and a family friend was seated at our table. My SIL explained her nursery theme and our friend was nice about it, but basically told my SIL her nursery was a form of cultural appropriation for Native American culture and told her to rethink it, because, quote: “Your daughter is going to look back at pictures of how you’ve done her room and be really embarrassed.”
I know this is quite a popular theme besides my SIL picking it. I’ve seen countless decor for it as well as Pinterest ideas based around a “tribal” theme.
Do you guys feel styling a nursery with teepees and dreamcatchers as cute decor is a sort of cultural appropriation, or is it okay?
