Pain in anal area?

My period is a literal pain in the ass. No joke. I get sharp bursts of pain near my bum, that hurt worse than any cramp or bloating ever. I'd rather have cramps all day than this. I only experience this at night during my period. And I end up staying up sometimes the entire night because right when I think I've found peace, BAM! Butt pain. My doctor told me its normal and should wear off eventually but I think there's more to it.. Anyone else experience anything like this?
