Opinions on BC

So I’m in my first serious relationship and I’m now sexually active. I want to be on birth control for 2 reasons. 1 being that I don’t want to get pregnant and want to have save sex and 2 for my period. I’m not sure how to approach my mother telling her I want to be on it, since I’m still under her insurance

Also is birth control is good thing? I don’t know much about it. I’m interested in learning though
