Is this normal behavior for some with autism?

One of my friends have autism. He can say some things that freak us out alittle, but we overlook it because we know he has autism. Well yesterday he was driving my husband and I around in his car. He wasn't paying attention to the road and almost got us into a wreck, but luckily I told him he was swerving into the other lane in time. He then pulled off to the side of the road and kept throwing himself into the wall of a building yelling how he could of killed my husband and I. We had no idea what to do. I am kind of scared to hang out with him again after that because everytime we hang out, he wants to drive us around. Well I already have PTSD when it comes to riding in cars because my mom and I have almost been ran off the road a few times by 18 wheelers, so this set my PTSD off. Could his behavior towards that situation have been from his autism?

Yes that’s normal. Why is he driving for one? Sounds like he shouldn’t be. I’m a caregiver to an autistic child and he literally makes holes in the walls with his head. He’s busted my nose before and all kinds of stuff. It’s something that can be reversed with the right help though.

His brain has a different way of thinking and for him to react that way he felt guilty that he couldnt do something right as we think is simple its hard for him. He might want to be driving you around because he wants to feel just like anyone else. And do "simple tasks" that we do. I understand your ptsd but try to be patient. Hes not trying to purposely hurt you he obviously felt so guilty. Its not his fault for reacting this way.

Yes, this is a normal autistic behavior. However, just because he has the ability to drive doesn't mean he is a safe or reliable driver. I've known several people on the autistic spectrum. Some are totally fine driving, and you would never know they were autistic, save for several "quirks" and the need for quiet, dimly lit places with low stimuli. Others, such as the man you are describing, have great difficulty processing emotion and thought, especially when they're could be serious consequences. I've seen children punch through walls and need to be physically restrained. Adults do the same thing. I wouldn't drive with the young men again. He may be capable of driving a car, but he isn't safe behind the wheel.

My cousin has very bad autism and whenever he feels guilty or ashamed of himself he gets very aggressive towards himself like he’ll hit his head on the back of his headboard and will bite the inside of his cheeks till they bleed, it’s not healthy but it’s a very physical reaction to emotions that a lot of people with autism suffer from

My brother has a form of autism. If you guys hang out you or your husband should drive. If he starts to go into an episode help him calm down by taking deep breaths and then averting his attention to the next activity, so he's not hurting himself.
