How much to breast milk do you give your newborn?

He’s on the bottle now but only breast milk. I hear you can’t over feed on the breast but you can on the bottle. How much do you give then?

The general rule for breastmilk is 1-1.5oz per hour no matter what age. My daughter is almost 11 months old and has never taken more than 4oz in a single feeding. Make sure you pace feed the bottles.

I think that’s more if it’s coming from the breast but yes, over feeding is less of an issue. Their stomach is only the size of a marble so they drink very tiny quantities to fill that but they do that on quite a regular basis. Ask your midwife for info showing you how much they should have :) x

We started off with 1.5 and worked our way up. For a while he was drinking 3 ounces every 3 hours and seemed pretty content with that. I had always read there is no need to increase the amount you give them and should not go over 4 ounces per feeding but my baby was not gaining weight. It’s definitely best to consult your pediatrician. Our pediatrician said to add 1.5 to 2 ounces for what month they are. (i.e 2 months should be 3.5 to 4 ounces, although he said it’s not an exact science). I think it caps off at like 7 ounces though.  He is currently almost 3 months and now eats up 4.5 to 5 ounces every 2.5 to 3 hours. We find out next week if he is gaining the weight he should be!

I was giving 1.5-2oz to start and if she still seemed hungry I’d offer her another ounce. We’re up to 4oz now at 10 weeks.
