Owlet, is it worth it?

Question

So this girl I know told me it's an essential because it helps prevent your baby from dying. I do believe its helpful and makes you more aware but overall, as a new mom is it an essential? I would think that a crib is more essential than this. 
She also gave me this article to read.

Plus an owlet is $300.

I’m not a fan of company who utilizes “fear mongering” as a sell tactic. My nurse or doctor I know does not recommend it. The false alarms are place unneeded stress. Now if your kid actually had issues I could see this being useful, but so is keeping your child with you at all times.

Definitely wouldn’t call it an essential. After my little one was found non-responsive in the car seat, we immediately thought we should get one. We talked to the doctors at the hospital about it and they strongly discouraged it, saying it gives a false sense of security. Their argument was, people go off of the owlet saying everything is fine, even though it might not be. They were much more concerned about that than it going off when there wasn’t a problem. We ended up not getting one, and got along fine.

Not essential, but definitely good for some circumstances. We used it for over a year with our son. When he was born, he wasn’t breathing and we were sure we had lost him. It took 5 minutes for them to get a response from him. Luckily, after he came back to us, he just spent one night in the nursery at the hospital and was fine. But, because that happened, my in laws instantly went out and drove over an hour to get us the owlet. 
When our son was about 3 months old, he had another scary event. He woke up from his nap one day and was crying, so I went in to get him. He stopped crying, but then he started straining like he was trying to poop. He turned red and then went limp. He started to close his eyes. He was turning pale and he was cold and clammy. At this time, we weren’t using the owlet for naps, so I don’t know if the owlet would have detected something or not. I instantly called 911 while I took him to start doing CPR. He woke up without me having to do anything for him but he was still pale and his lips were purple. He also wasn’t responding to me when I was trying to get him to look at me or smile (usually he was really responsive). After going to the hospital, they couldn’t really explain what happened or why. They just labeled it as an apparent life threatening incident. Obviously, that didn’t really sit well with us and we were scared to death it would happen again.
He had another incident at about 5 months old where we believe he was having a reaction to food or he had a stomach virus and he was throwing up horribly. We had to take him to the er again. They had to give him an iv. We were transferred to children’s hospital. Again, no one had any real answers for us.
None of these things left us feeling confident when he was sleeping so we used the owlet every time he was sleeping and it gave us a little piece of mind that if something did happen, we would be alerted. We never got false alarms. The disconnected alarm would go off every so often, but we knew not to freak out over that. Another huge benefit that we got from it was that we could check it any time and see what his heart rate was. We knew his heart rate was normally at a certain pace, so if it was much higher than that, it was a good indicator that he might be getting a fever, so we would know before he even woke up, if he was sick.
Anyway, that was a lot of explaining, but I feel like when you are spending big money on something like that, you need more info.

I absolutely love mine! However, I wouldn’t necessarily call it essential. People have been fine without it for generations. It is the only way I got any sleep though.

I love mine and the only reason i slept at all the first 4 months of my sons life was because i knew he had it on. You dont have to buy one new! I bought mine on offer up for 140$ and it works perfect. Its all personal preference but id rather get an annoying false alarm (which has only happened once in 6mo) than no alarm at all if something were to be wrong. Just me though. Depends on if you're an anxious person or not. Im in the medical field and my head is filled with all of the scary stuff that can happen to babies in their sleep, so for me it was an essential. But do your own research and shop around! You'd be surprised at the deals you can find for one

We had a mattress sensor underneath and if the baby stopped breathing or moving an alarm went off and it was a god send and they aren’t that expensive

Not an essential. I haven’t had my baby yet but we got a cocoon cam monitor that was less than half the price of an owlet and monitors breathing with nothing but the camera! It has super good reviews if you wanted a cheaper alternative like I did.

I've had an owlet and it gave me a false reading it scared me so bad we went to the er..... it isn't worth it. I would invest in a video monitor system over one of these.
