Copper coil experiences please & possible alternatives!

I have tried LOTS of contraceptive options and seem to have exhausted most of them!

I am prone to depression cause by hormone based contraceptives, but still I have tried mini pill, depo injections, mirena coil and most recently the combination pill in the pursuit to see what, if any, can work for me.

So far no luck. 😔

My doctor is now recommending I don't experiment with any more hormone based ones. She's advised I get the copper coil (hormone free) or rely on condoms & other similar techniques.

I am reluctant about the coil based on my experience with the mirena one. Insertion was fine, but the intense cramping and bleeding that followed was horrendous! I voiced this to my doctor who tried to reassure me by telling me the cramps and bleeding would've been cause by the hormone release and that the copper version, with no hormones present, shouldn't have those side effects...

Now I need to know peoples personal experiences with copper coils! Is it true that they're a little nicer? Or should I still expect similar side effects? Is the doctor downplaying it? She did before with the mirena. 🤷‍♀️

Also, if anyone has had similar experiences with contraceptive based depression and has any options I might not have thought of yet I'd love to hear them!! 🙂
