How early can you detect a heartbeat?

I had my first ultrasound today and by my calculations I'm exactly 6 weeks.  We saw the sac but nothing else. Dr. said was even unsure about seeing a yolk sac and we obviously didn't detect any heartbeat. I've been spotting for over a week with a reddish brown discharge and I'm just worried sick. How early can the heartbeat be detected? He pretty said things are inclonslsive and we'll do another ultrasound in a week. 😥

Same thing happened to me today.  The doc saw a gestational sac and a yolk but couldn't see a heartbeat.  I'm going back in a week.  It was so disheartening.  My only hope is that my calculation is incorrect.  I had two periods within two weeks so I'm hoping I'm just too early to be able to detect one.

I saw a heartbeat at 6w3d, which was my first u/s.

I think when you hear the heartbeat is dependant on where everything is sitting. 
I have a retroverted uterus (tilts backwards) and they often can even find my ovaries on an ultrasound. 
It must be such a worrying time, but to your best to stay positive 🙏🏻

I was told 8wks..... My baby's stopped at 8wks and 4 days..... Two days before we got to hear it
