Start running

I want to start running and I go during term time because of the school gym (I don’t mind treadmills) but I want to start going regularly at home as well. The area I live in just doesn’t suit running and I don’t feel completely safe running in the neighbourhood alone in early mornings or evenings - which is when I would go on runs. I thought about getting gym subscription but they are all either too far away or too expensive because I would only be using it during holidays. To be honest I just want to start running to loose weight and I don’t really know an easier form of cardio. How do I start running??
