“Is she yours?”

Well it finally happened. Someone asked me if my mixed baby was “mine”. I’m white, my husband is black. My daughter is almost two. She and I were hiking and a college aged girl came up to us and said that she wanted to baby wear her kid once she has one too. Then she saw my daughter and asked me if she was mine. I said “yep” and she said that she’s cute. I guess it wasn’t offensive and I’m not mad. But it’s just the first time this has happened. Makes me wonder if everyone else wonders the same thing but just doesn’t say anything. But I suppose it doesn’t matter what others think.

As a mixed race female I can say his happens often. When I’m out with my black grandad, white grandma, mixed race mum etc it’s always happened. All my life. Going out with my mixed cousins that looked visibly white with my dark skin Jamaican grandad I remember him being stopped several times sadly and asked who the kids are to him, as if he were stealing them. It’s a shame that people even feel that they are entitled to approach you to ask who a child is to you, but sadly it happens and in my experience, it hasn’t slowed down as I’ve got older. But ignore them & their ignorance, as long as your child grows up being loved immensely that’s all that matters! X

As a mixed race baby and the mother of mixed race kids, it's going to happen and I'm glad you're not mad, as theres literally no point in being mad. People are just curious and ignorant and sometimes neither are from a bad place and other times they are. You just have to deal with it. My mum had warned me when I had my first that it would happen and not to take offense. It isnt worth the effort. Who cares if the rest of the world wonders the same thing. It doesn't change her being yours. Fuck the world mama!

Im mixed. My mother is white.. (my cousin her niece is also mixed but she is kore pale then me.. ) when i was younger we went to the movies together and it was were your parent had to be with you because of the ratings.. well the lady believed my cousin was my mother's child but i was not and wouldn't let us in....

I think people do this out of curiosity not out of being mean. We are all different and it’s ok to be curious about genetics too. Like I am always shocked when a mixed couple has a baby that’s blonde (the light gene won that is) and it’s just plain curious and like learning about how unpredictable this is. It’s not about hate or being a racist. People need to relax and acknowledge that we are all different physically and it’s ok!

I get this all the time. I can’t count the number of times someone has asked me that. Once a little kid asked me if i was babysitting because she didn’t look like me. His mom was like i am so sorry but i wasn’t offended. He was like 3-4.
