what do i do about my mom?

my mom and i are VERY close. my dad passed away when i was 14 (i’m 20) and up until i was 18 she got a total of 1200 a month between me and my brother for social security benefits. well mine stopped when i turned 18 but i was still in school, ( they were supposed to continue until i graduated) and so they’re sending us a check for the time she wasn’t getting them to make up for it. she told me she would split it with me. my question is, is this technically my money? the letter about it was addressed to me.

okay. i said in the comments i am NOT saying i want all this to myself. she told me on her OWN she’s split it with me. i was asking ONLY cause the letter was addressed to me. in no way was i meaning i didn’t want her to have it.

If you were living at home or she was financially supporting you for the most part then she should get it.

I would consider this as " child support " money.

The money is given so the surviving parent can take care of their child. If it is back payment for a time period when you lived under her roof, ate her food, and wore the clothes that she bought, it’s her money.

Were you living with her during that time? Or did you dorm? Did she pay for your schooling? Or did you use loans? 
If you were living with her, and she paid for your school, than I agree to splitting it.
If you didn’t, and took out loans, than I think it’s fair it goes to you.

That money is being sent to make up for the time that wasn’t paid for CHILD SUPPORT. It’s not adult benefits. I was in the same situation , my father passed when i was 11. That money should go to her.

I view it as a reimbursement for the money she spent supporting you, so it's her money. It's addressed to you now only because you're an adult, but the intended purpose was for your mother to have that income to help cover the living costs she paid for you

Have you taken any money from your mother since the money stopped? Have you lived with her? Eaten from her fridge? Does she pay for your car? Phone? Groceries? School? Medical? Clothes? Accommodation? If you have financially depended on your mom then it’s her money not yours.

That money was to support you. It's sent on your behalf to your parent. It's addressed to you bc you're an adult. You should give your mother the entire amount. She already spent that money taking care of you. She's clearly generous offering you half. It's not spending cash. It's meant for your basic needs.
