My uncle just called us and said he has a “mass in his lung.” Is that cancer?

That’s all he told us at the moment.  Like literally he’s at the doc and it’s brand-new news.  Just kind of left hanging like what’s going on so I’m freaking out.  Can anyone tell me what this is?  Is it most likely cancer?  I’m kind of freaking out.. my uncle is one of my favorite people on this planet

It’s either a benign or malignant clump of cells. It would have to be biopsied and tested to know for sure. If it’s malignant, that means cancerous. But at this point if it hasn’t been biopsied, there’s no point in worrying. Just be supportive.

No! It’s not necessarily cancer so don’t assume the worst until he has more testing. My mother in law had a small marking on a chest x-Ray they thought was a mass and it turned out to be a common fungal infection she got from taking care of her chickens.
My husband also had a small mass show up on chest x-ray. Biopsy showed it was just a fibroid and completely benign.

A mass could mean a cancerous mass or not. There is just something there. They will do more tests to figure out what it is and how to treat it. ❤️

Dont freak out until you get confirmation of what it is. It could be a benign nodule, cyst, or any other number of noncancerous lumps. I hope it's not cancer and he's okay!

It could be a number of things. Don’t assume things until his doctor says otherwise. My grandfather had a baseball size mass in his lungs but it wasn’t cancer, it was just an abnormal growth that they had to break up and remove. He lived with it for years and years before they were able to completely remove it. And he is still going strong.
