Do I need to continue to wait?

So the last time my boyfriend now ex was at my house we had been having some really bad issues with our relationship and he said he knew I was going to leave him which sadly i did but we did have unprotected sex before I broke up with him and he left, i know stupid, however this was almost 3 weeks ago and he told me he came inside of me as a way to get me not to leave (by having his child) and of course this freaked me out and I took a test, it said not pregnant but I still have a week till my period is supposed to come should I have waited till after my period was supposed to come to take the test?
