Are rodeos cruel?

It’s rodeo season where I live again and the protestors are out in full force. Roping was already banned where I live. Aka chasing a calf/steer/sheep on horse back and catching and tieing them with a rope. But what about all the other events. Is the rodeo a cruel event? Should they be banned? 
For just some food for thought, no pun intended. Most animals people eat are often  treated in harsher conditions than the animals at the rodeo. Many rodeo animals are raised for rodeo, live a long(er) life than slaughter animals and have their health looked after.

Yes they are, to me personally even though rodeos aren't typically considered as cruelty. Any "sport" that involves tying up, riding a clearly agitated animal and the likes is cruelty to me.

Sometimes I do cringe with how harsh they can be with the steers but this is also what they are raised for. The riders can also get penalized for using excessive force

I grew up going to the rodeo in Wyoming. In essence, chasing and hog-tying an animal for show is cruel, but it’s also a skill that ranchers need to master while working with these animals. I don’t go to the rodeo anymore, but I do appreciate the art and hard work of a real cowboy.

I think that purposefully agitating an animal for the purpose of riding it or tying it up is cruel. The meat industry is also cruel, but that doesn’t negate the cruelty you see at a rodeo. I grew up with rodeo participants, and many of them cared about their animals, but many of them were also abusive. One man I knew punished his horse for not preforming well by tying its for legs together and dragging it by its legs behind his truck. I have a lot of other stories like that. I do not support the rodeo.

Go out to any cattle ranch and you’ll see these guys doing this. It was and still is the lay of the land for many cattle ranchers. The events came out of real things that they do. Steer wrestling was a way to get a bull down to be castrated or branded. Roping is how they bring in a lost or strayed cow. Bronc riding was part of training and taming a horse. People from back east moved out and saw the entertainment value of these things and modern rodeo evolved out of that.

Yes! Animals aren't entertainment or toys or something for us to dominate. They're living, breathing, feeling creatures who deserve much better.

I miss barrel racing 😭 I want to say mostly no, but I mostly only know about the horse portion of them (reining, barrels, roping). Our horses were always well handled and loved, and had a better life than their riders 😂 you couldn’t force a horse to perform that didn’t want to. They love the sport as much as we do and love to run. My horse, I had to hold back because she would ALWAYS get me penalized for breaking the gate too early out of excitement. 
As for the bull riding or bronco riding, I find that stuff stupid. It’s dangerous to the rider and stressful for the bulls. I can see how that could be considered cruel, even with them being treated well outside the ring. 
Roping I’m on the fence with. I can see how it’s stressful/mean to the calf. But it’s an actual thing that people do when working cattle; they just turned it into a pastime sport as well. The horses and riders enjoy it, and is it only cruel because they’re doing it for “fun” and a ribbon as opposed to doing it out of necessity during their work?

Eh. I bet the animals would choose this over being eaten, if they were given the option.
