How long is too long, to get over someone?

My ex and I dated for 4 years. We were going to get married, had our lives planned out. But something changed about 6 months before the break up. I felt like I had lost him around that mark. It’s now been 8 months, and I’m still not over him. He said, when we broke up, that he wanted nothing to do with me. And he hasn’t contacted me since then... but I can’t shake this feeling he may, one day... once I finally let go.
