Why did you get married or want to get married?

If someone asked you why did you get married or want to get married? What would you say? I am getting married soon and the father of the church asked us why did we want to get married instead of just being together. He said like what would be the difference of being married. So we told him but I want to hear what you guys would say.

That's a great and legitimate question for unmarried couples to ask themselves. I have a friend whose culture is so marriage-obsessed that he's completely turned away from it. He has really wise and reasonable arguments against marriage: it legally binds you to a person that may not be good for you in the long run and does not account for the changes that you'll both undergo, or prevent you from evolving at certain points in your life, decisions that you'd make easily are subject to arguments, fights, debates and/or compromise. All the love stuff can still take place outside the institution of marriage. 
My only response that holds weight with him is that you're allowed to visit spouses in the hospital and have more legal authority if you're official. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I feel like when you marry, you're choosing that person to be your family member vs you can just easily part ways tomorrow.

I got married because I was ready to commit myself to my partner and I was ready to publicly declare that commitment. My vows meant something. They were a promise from me to him, and to everyone in attendance, that I would be his partner for life no matter what. Our wedding bound us together. Our marriage is the result of that binding.

• I love him with all my heart. To show that this is so much deeper and more serious than previous relationships. Our love is on a whole new level.
• I would like both of us and everyone else to know that we are 100% committed to each other and are off the market. 
• When we have children I would like both of us and our kids to be united as a family under the same name.
