Late period but I’m on birth control??

So I started oral birth control almost a year ago to regulate my periods. Since then, my periods have always been on time and started exactly after 28 days. Last month’s period wasn’t the same as the others. It started a day late and was much shorter than usual. This month’s, I’m also a day late. My question is, can my period still be “regulating” itself?

I had sex with my boyfriend mid-April (long distance relationship) and got my May period. We had sex a week ago but we definitely played it safe.

Has this happened to anyone before??
