Laughing Gas during labor?

This sounds absolutely crazy, but I saw an ad for the Honest Company and women’s birthing plans.  Someone commented that instead of an epidural they had laughing gas and were extremely comfortable.  It has less side effects than an epidural.  Has anyone heard of this or done it before?

It's super common here in the UK. I used it, but seem to be very tolerant. The midwifes tell you only to breathe it in while you have a contraction. When I did it that way it didn't work for me at all. A year after I had my second daughter I was picked up by the ambulance because of kidney cramps. They gave me gas and air (that's what we call laughing gas here in the UK) and I was told to consistently breathe it in. It took them ages to asses me because of my other medical issues. Around 45 minutes I was finally pain free. I still felt the cramping but it wasn't painful, it was just like someone pushing my kidney slightly.

I’m not sure if my hospital offers it, but will ask if they do once I’m there. I’m trying to do this naturally but if I need an epidural I’m not opposed, however would like another option for pain management.

If my birth center offers it I would definitely consider it! I've heard it's less of a pain suppressant as it is something that eases your anxiety so the pain is manageable. Also, it only goes to the mom and doesn't affect the baby, which I don't believe is true for an epidural (although of course an epidural is still safe and a great option, just there are some effects found on the baby in some cases).
