How do I know when my stomach is empty?

I'm sure this sounds like such a stupid question, but I have been given a medication and my Dr told me it is very important that I take it on an empty stomach and not eat for an hour after.
So how long after you eat is your stomach "empty"?
Also, anyone know why a medication would need to be taken on an empty stomach and why I can't eat for an hour? I have never been given a medicine like this, so I have no clue the reasoning. I did not even think to ask the Dr when she told me.

First thing in the morning or at least 2-3 hours after having food or drink . The reasons that they make you do this vary , but Include things like - the medicine could make you nauseous and make you throw up so it’s better to have nothing , it could be more effective if your stomach is empty .

I've had a medication like that before. I always just took it in the morning before I ate breakfast because I wouldn't have eaten since the evening before.
In my case, my doc told me that my body would have a harder time absorbing the medicine if I had food in my system.

I have a medication that I take everyday and have to do so on an empty stomach. I take it when I wake up, with at least 8 oz of water. Once I take it I don't eat for an hour afterwards. I was told that if I take it during the day to not eat for 4 hours beforehand to ensure my stomach is empty. They said it was to reduce side effects and to make sure that it is absorbed properly. If there is food it will be digested quicker and leave my body/pass my stomach too quickly causing the medication to be ineffective
