Coffee while breastfeeding?

Help! I didn’t drink any caffeine while pregnant and thinking about drinking it now while breastfeeding. Does is effect the baby? Like can they sleep good if I do? Are they fussier?

Best thing is to make sure to have that one cup right after a feeding, that way you give the best possible amount of time to filter that caffeine.

Caffeine never bothered my son while breastfeeding. I’m sure every baby will react differently. But I only had about 1 every couple days.

It will still be transferred but I'm smaller amounts. But it can still build up in your babies system over time. Its recommended no more than 300mg per day MAX while breastfeeding. I did one cup (80-100mg)  while he was an infant still and now that's he's a toddler I've gone up to 2-3 cups a day.  Depending on the caffeine content.  I haven't noticed any problems with him not sleeping

If I dont have coffee in the morning I am a mess. It doesn't bother my son at all. I even quit for a little to see if it effected him but there was no infications of it so I'm back on coffee.

Some babies are sensitive to caffeine but most aren't. Our lactation consultants aren't concerned about me drinking an excessive amount as long as I stay hydrated to keep up the milk production. If baby doesn't sleep well or gets an upset tummy, try stopping it and see if that helps.

I drank a cup of coffee in the morning everyday while pregnant and breastfeeding. I’d get the worst migraines all day if I didn’t. My baby never had any problems with gas or tummy aches and she sleeps all night long.

Anything you consume can effect the baby. I would only do one cup, maybe decaf. I gave up caffeine while i breastfeed. I once ate hooters. My son had such a bad tummy ache, i just gave up fast food.

We I was trying to breastfeed the lactation counselor said 1 cup was fine but to stop if it seemed to upset babies belly.

I cut on the caffeine while pregnant and now that I’m breastfeeding I only have 1 cup in the mornings and not as strong as I used to have my coffee.

I had a Dr Pepper while breastfeeding and my 5 day old was awake and crying and miserable for hours! I haven’t had caffeine since and he sleeps so good
