Parents with children with disabilities.

I was recently shopping with my 9 month old baby and my 3 year old nephew. My nephew has a speech delay and has been enrolled to preschool to work on his speech. He’s in a stage of repeating/copying everything anyone does.

As we were walking around the store, my nephew starting mocking a child with disabilities. I can’t tell you what was wrong with the child ( it doesn’t really matter) but he was in a wheel chair and making sounds.

I immediately grabbed my nephew, knelt down and said “That wasn’t nice, you don’t do that.” I stood up and said “I’m so sorry” to his mom. She replied, “it’s okay”

But I wasn’t too content with everything I said to my nephew. It was in the moment but I wanted him to know there are many different children in the world and we should accept everyone. At the same time, my nephew isn’t fully comprehending of everything we say to him right now.

With that being said, parents with children with disabilities, what could i have said or what could I say in the future in these situations. I want my children to be respectfully and nice to everyone.
