Is asking "what are we" a way of being asked out?

While an old friend was in town we went out on a date, he gave me a kiss when he dropped me off. The next day we ended up hanging out again. While we were on our way to pick up our friend after his shit, he asked what we were. I just responded saying "can we take is slow".... i guess I finally realized how I fucked up...

So, my fiance and I started to see each other and didn't want to label it... until his friend asked me out to dinner if we weren't dating so I had to ask him "what do I tell him, what are we?" And hes like you're my girlfriend!

Also, you can recover easily by saying something like "I will be exclusive woth you but I don't want to label anything yet becaise I feel like it will jinx things"

I would say it was way for him to indirectly hint that he has more feelings for you or would like to have more of a relationship with you... I don't think you messed up though his way was indirect so it isn't very shocking of your type of answer
I don't think he will mind if you bring up the topic again to clarify your own thoughts and or feelings

Honestly just go with the flow. My boyfriend of 2 years now, after we were talking for about 5 months prior, invited me to a party with his close friends. He introduced me as his friend at first which I really didn’t care about, then later that night he stopped me and apologized, said I really am his girlfriend. That’s where it all started. 
My point being, it’ll happen when it needs to happen. When you both feel right.
