HSG... does it hurt?

Question

I am awaiting an appointment date/time for an HSG.  I was told the day after is very painful and I will want to be at home to deal with the cramping and pain. What about the procedure itself? Is it painful to have done? Also, for anyone who was abnormal with their cycle how long did you have to wait after the procedure to begin clomid or Femara?

I had it done in January. Definitely take some ibuprofen, or something, ahead of time. For me, the most uncomfortable part was inserting the catheter through the cervix. It felt like moderate to severe cramping and pinching at the same time.  
When they put the dye in, it caused some more cramping. My tubes were clear, so not a lot of pain. I have a couple friends who had blocked tubes and said the pain was awful when the dye was pushed through. But, it cleared their tubes and both ended up pregnant shortly after!
I had mild cramps the two days following the procedure. Definitely bring a pad, because the dye comes out later!

I had one the beginning of this month. I took some ibuprofen 30 minutes before and it wasn’t bad for me. A tiny pinch and a little discomfort for maybe 30 seconds. I had no cramping following the procedure. My period was slightly heavier this month though. That’s about all I noticed. I know some people experience more pain during or after but for me it wasn’t bad at all. So hopefully yours is as easy and mostly pain free!

I honestly didn’t think it hurt at all. I had minor spotting and very minor cramping after and that was it. I have had two done over the past few years

It wasn’t painful for me, just uncomfortable. I had mild cramps and spotting afterwards. Tylenol helped

Mine didn’t hurt while they were doing it but afterwards I had bad cramping.

I had the saline version done (I’m anaphylactic to shellfish and iodine) and it was awful. They pinched my inner thigh putting the speculum in, the catheter caused a ton of cramping, the saline caused even more cramping and they had to unblock my left tube which made me want to crawl out of my own body at that point. I couldn’t take ibuprofen as I’m on blood thinners so I took Tylenol which did nothing. 
I’d only do it again if I was sedated. I hope yours is better.

Was easy for me.   I read so many horror stories and got worried.   But my experience was nothing like what I read.   Maybe a quick short amount of light cramping that only lasted not even a minute.

Take 4 advil 30 mins before.. try to relax as much as possible.  It hurts yes but relaxing helps. Good luck!
