What to call strangers kids?

Ladies I'm not a parent. I always show children the same respect I show adults but i just got my ass CHEWED at the gas station. 
A woman and little boy about 5 or 6 are walking out ahead of me. He stops and holds the door for me and I smile and say "thank you sir!", he smiles back And I keep walking. 
Y'all, this woman comes at me screaming not to call her kid sir because he's not grown and I should address him like the child he is and I could've said "hun or sweetie"! 
Ummmmmm what?! Y'all if I'm wrong please tell me! What should a stranger address your child as?

Um wow. That bitch is crazy lol. I teach second grade and sometimes I call my students sir or ma'am lol. Just like when you said it to the boy holding the door open for you,  I say the same thing to my students when they hold the door open for me. You did nothing wrong.

Sir was perfectly fine. I would have said hun or sweetie but that's cause of where I grew up and everyone says hun and sweetie. She was just crazy

She sounds like a crazy person. My husband calls our son “sir” all the time. I would never mind a stranger calling him that too and I wouldn’t hesitate to call another kid that. It seems polite to me.

I would have just been happy you said thank you . Shes the reason why people arent kind anymore . It's better to just not say anything anymore . Everyones always offended by the smallest of things .

You aren’t the problem. The parent is. What you said was perfectly fine and the child had manners. That is something ridiculous to get upset over. He was just being respectful towards you, and she should have been proud.
