Getting a separate bank account ?

Question

I opened my bank account when I was 17 with my mom because I started a job and needed somewhere to put my money. Since I was a minor she had to join my account to hers. Now that I’m 19 I want it to be separate. Would I have to have her permission? Would I have to close my account and open a new one? I wouldn’t mind having a joint account except for the fact that she stalks my transactions and always has something to say about my money.

If it’s a joint account you would require both individuals to close. 
You could just open a personal account and switch any payments or deposits over.

Hi, I’m in a similar situation you don’t need to necessarily close the account to open another account, give your work your new account details and it’ll go straight into your new one. I’d recommend when you open if you take her with you to make sure that she doesn’t have the ability to ask the bank for bank balance if she’s your emergency contact.
