I’m confused

I was dating this guy then he called me while on vacation saying he wanted a break... now I don’t know if I like him... my life has been easier without him... but he’s going to lose his dad to cancer soon... I don’t want him to lose me and his dad around the same time... I don’t want to hurt him... but I also don’t want to lie to him... anymore... sometimes I like him (or think I do) sometimes I just don’t know how I feel... and others I don’t like him at all... what do I do?
