Paternity testing - prenatal

I am creating this post for informational purposes. I couldn’t find any information on the topic back when I needed it, so I am posting this to hopefully help someone else.

I am currently 25 weeks pregnant. I am not 100% sure who the father is. That’s something that a lot of women can’t/won’t admit. People don’t ask their friends where to dna test. And since regular doctors offices don’t dna test, even your doctor isn’t particularly helpful.

There’s a lot of slut shaming surrounding not knowing who the father is. But if everyone were really honest with themselves, there’s probably been a cycle where you could’ve gotten pregnant and not known who the dad is.

I did research on paternity tests prior to birth. I came across the noninvasive prenatal testing. I asked my doctor about it, and he said science wasn’t that good yet. I wasn’t going to do an amnio, so I faced the facts that I wouldn’t know who the father was until after birth.

A couple months later, I mentioned to my doctor that it was upsetting to not know who the father was. At this point, he told me he had done research on the noninvasive prenatal testing.

I wish I had done my own research at the time of conception/in the first trimester. If you are in a situation where you need noninvasive prenatal testing, look into a company called Ravgen. If I would’ve even had the name of a company to start researching, I would’ve been out of this mess months ago.

Not knowing who the father is has been a giant rain cloud over my pregnancy. I wish I had done the test sooner. Do the test early. Don’t wait until you’re 6 months in like me. You’ll be so relieved when it’s over.
