There is a reason behind being asked not to go to this pub in the first place ... I have to ask this question for my sanity.

I would respect my partner enough not to, especially if there’s a good reason. 
But at the same time, I think trying to tell him where he can/can’t go is a little toxic

I'm assuming that you have a very good reason for not wanting him to go. Since that's the case he should put you first. There are many different places he could go. If he cares more about going to this specific place than what it will do to his relationship he obviously doesn't value it or care if it works. A relationship is about understanding and compromise if you can't compromise and respect your partners feelings you shouldn't be in a relationship. You don't just get to do whatever you want once another person is involved and a lot of people don't understand that.

If it’s for a good reason I’d be pissed off. If it’s over something stupid then no, but then I wouldn’t have told him he couldn’t go in the first place. Hard to tell without context in your situation though.
