Puzzle Piece for Autism

I'm just curious about everyone's opinion on this. I was out and about and the lady in front of me at the register was telling the cashier that her autism puzzle piece necklace was incredibly offensive and went on and on. While the way she handled it was really rude, I was intrigued by what she was saying. I had never heard about any controversy surrounding this so I did some article digging and found that many people are offended by the symbol for various reasons and want to see it changed to something else. Being as uneducated as I am on the topic, I'm just not sure and would love more info either way as well as your opinion.
