When should you buy your child a phone?

So I have 2 daughters, 5 and 7. I am against them having a phone right now. But their dad and I are not together. Their dad wants to get my 7 year old a phone (with all the parental controls possible) so he can talk to them, especially while I'm at school. He asked for my opinion but I told him I dont want her to have a phone yet. Around what age have you bought your children a phone?

I was 13-14 when I got my first phone, going into high school with after school things so I needed one to call my parents so they knew when I’d be done. I don’t want my kids to have a phone until then because why do they need one? Really?

I think all depends on the situation my 11 almost 12 year cuz has a phone cux shes goes on the school bus and her grandmother that watches her as diabetes and no house phone. I know my children wont get them untill there old like me i was in 8th going into high school when i got my first i personlly feel no need for children to have ohone unless emergency or there off with there friends with no paerents what dont happen till there older

My boyfriends daughter is 8 now but she has had a phone since she was 7. Her mom has a lot of parental controls set up on it so she can only talk to a select few family members/trusted family friends. She put a lock on it so she can’t use it after a certain time. I honestly didn’t know you could set up that many parental controls on an iPhone lol. She has an old iPhone6. I personally don’t find it necessary for her to have a phone because she spends a lot of time on it watching random youtube videos and sometimes I don’t find what she watches appropriate for her age, but for the most part it’s nice for my boyfriend to be able to keep in touch with her while he’s away for work since he doesn’t see her as much as he would like to. I think maybe finding a way to communicate without all the extra stuff might be good for their relationship, just be careful what they have access to!

I didn’t get a phone until I was 16 but that was a million years ago lol. My parents are divorced and my sisters had a house phone when they were maybe 11 and 12 to be able to speak to my dad. Then it turned into a nightmare because the number was given to a bunch of people and it just created drama. 
I know a woman who has an 8 year old and in order for her father to speak to her, he has to call the daughters iPad. It has a million parental controls on it and it works for them. You just do what feels right for you and your family.

I heard they have watches for kids now that have your numbers programmed into them so they can easily contact you! All without the internet and what that entails..

I got my first phone when I started 7th grade, so 12 years old. That was in 2007. Maybe there are different standards now. I’ll probably wait until my kids are about that same age to get them a phone. Before they get a cell phone, I’ll get them something like a kid version of a smart watch, which is a really good tool to keep them safe before they get a cell phone.
