Anyone else’s toddler have speech delay?

My son is 18 months old and was diagnosed with a speech delay. 16 percent delay per early intervention evaluation but no other issues and was diagnosed through them and his pediatrician as an isolated speech delay since nothing else is going on. We just got him into speech a few days ago. But I can’t help feel like it’s all my fault because he’s my first and I’m a stay at home mom at the moment since moving and now he’s his is 18 month marker and there has been some improvement but no real words for except for dog or dada and maybe a few others I can’t detect what they mean.but I feel live failed and I’m worried hes never going to actually talk...

My son didn't say anything at that age (just babbling) & my pediatrician told me there isn't anything to worry about unless he reaches age 2 with less than 5-10 words. Sure enough, his vocabulary EXPLODED around 21-22 months & now he's almost 2.5 with an incredible vocabulary & great speech. Most 18mo olds we've been around also weren't saying much. That seems incredibly premature of your dr.

You aren’t at fault at all... every child develops at their own rate.  You said so yourself it’s an isolated delay and only 16%... he’s right where he should be in every other aspect.  You are doing everything you can and by having the speech therapists out there, he will catch up in no time!

He’ll be fine. You’re definitely not a failure. Some kids are just late talkers! My son is 2.5 and still not talking that much. He understands everything though he just doesn’t wanna say words. I’m not concerned, I just continue reading to him and repeating words for him to learn. His dr said because he understands ‘commands’ like ‘can you go bring me your shoes’ and he goes then not to worry to much. We went to the early intervention and he’s 47% delayed in speech and they didn’t accept him cause he had to be 50% delayed in 1 category 🤦🏻‍♀️ or 25% in 2 categories but he was excellent with in the others. 
My nephew didn’t start talking til after he was 3, he talks so much now lol we miss him being our quiet boy 😆🤭

My 4.5 year old was diagnosed with a speech delay at 16 months she started speech at 18 months. We ended up at 3 having a tongue and lip tie revision and since then we have had no problems and she is talking so much. 
You have not failed! I felt that way as well. Although the TT< didn't cause my daughter not to speak it helped her with pronunciation and once she could pronounce letter sounds she became more confident. Speech is great and definitely not a sign that you failed.

Please don't feel it's your fault you are not to blame. Out of interest have you had his hearing checked ?? Reason i say this is because my 2.5 year son has never said a single word. We were told its a speech delay and he will speak withen time. This was at 16 months. They kept telling me it was speech delay until i pushed for a hearing test although they said no at first i demanded it and my sons just been diagnosed partially deaf hence why he says no words at all only sounds. Were being seen tmrw for further testing and treatment. Please get hearing checked if this has not been ruled out its often pushed aside and missed by medical proffessionals and they put it down to speech delay or lazyness. Do not feel bad its not your fault you cant blame yourself although its easy to do as i did too but we must keep strong for them

My son is 23 months, and we’ve had him in speech therapy for about 2 months now. I kept bringing the delay up with my doc, and he kept delaying a diagnosis. I started at 15 months, and I didn’t get any help until I demanded a referral at 20 months.  My son also has repetitive behaviors, so he’s considered at risk for autism. I’m waiting on the early intervention results for this Friday. So, I totally understand the guilt. We have been delayed bc if doctors since 15 months, and I hate myself for not pushing harder sooner. I just kept listening to people say crap like “well my son didn’t talk until 2.5” or “every baby is different,” and “oh don’t worry, I’m sure he’s fine.” Hes not fine! I’m glad I listened to my gut, and I’m proud or you for getting help for your child too. Speech therapy will probably help him tremendously. My son picked up the sign language really quick, and that alone has been helpful.

That’s totally normal and the important thing is you got him evaluated and he’s getting the extra support. My son qualified at 18 months and 6 months later was above average. Early intervention is awesome, no need to feel guilty/responsible.
