Does 13 Reasons Why send the wrong message?
I just finished Season 3 of 13 reasons and I was wondering what people’s perspective were on the whole series. I think that some may find that it brings light to issues that people are too uncomfortable to discuss. Sexual abuse and rape, depression and suicide, drug addiction, to name a few. Critics believe it may send the wrong message. Season 1 - Blaming Hannah’s suicide on bullying and other people’s actions without ever highlighting that she was mentally ill and needed help. Season 3 - The plot revolves around Bryce Walker, a serial rapist, and how he was murdered. A few issues I have with this.. 1) The entire time it shows him in a very good light, wanting to change and to be better, which I find a little unrealistic. At the end, you actually feel bad for the serial rapist. 2) Kids who frame another kid for murder just because this other kid is a bully. 3) Protecting potential school shooter (Season 2) Tyler from the police and taking turns “watching” him and trying to help him instead of telling the police or a mental health counselor. I feel like this could be really dangerous to do in real life. The kids basically took it in their own hands to heal this guy.
Anyways, the question isn’t if this show is okay to watch. It’s just a show. I’m just wondering how people feel about the message and if they’re getting it right or not.
