Kids in the delivery room?

Question

My son is 5 (he will be 6 next month) and my daughter is 3. I am due November 20th and part of me wants my kids in the room not during the pushing but part of the process in the beginning. I asked my SO if he would be comfortable with that and he said he doesn’t know how he feels about it; I question whether it would be a good idea, I also think they could help me relax through the contractions until I can get the epidural (if I don’t get it right away). I have sitter so someone to watch them isn’t the issue it’s part of me wants my kids there.
What do you think?

I think it would scare them to see mom in so much pain and stress them out with all of the action going on. I would have them in the waiting room with someone to watch them if I were you.

Me personally, no I would not. I wouldn’t want my kids to see me uncomfortable, I wouldn’t want them worried about about me. I also wouldn’t want to worry what they’re doing, if I have time to rest I want to be resting...not worrying about if my kid is touching something they shouldn’t or listening to them whine because they want this or that. That’s just me though.

You need to reach out to the location/hospital/birthing center etc that you plan to give birth and ask if they allow kids in the delivery room. 
What you want and what their policy is might be two different things.

My son had barely turned 2 when i delivered my daughter and i didnt want him to see me in pain cuz he had seen me in the hospital before and it made him very nervous so i had a sitter take him after i got to the hospital and she brought him back right after i delivered before i left the delivery room to meet her so it was very calm for him and he was so happy to see his sister. This time my kids will just barely turn 4 and 2 when i have this baby and i think I'll probably keep them out of the delivery room again cuz i think it would be hard and confusing for them to see me in such distress since they are still so young. I think if they were older like school age i would have them there cuz they would understand mommy is ok and that it'll be over soon but i think it would be too stressful for them cuz they dont understand that mommy isnt ok

If you decide to have them there, make sure the sitter is there too and available to take them home or into the waiting room at any time should complications arise or they start to feel scared/distressed. My kids are older ( 14 and 11 year old twins) and while I would consider and discuss the idea if they asked to be there, I do not plan on inviting them. I know they don't like to see me in pain, and I feel like it might be uncomfortable for them to know they can't help. Not to mention really boring too!

I think it depends how calm and collected you can seem. If you seem like you’re in a ton of pain it may freak your kids out. If it were me honestly I wouldn’t want to have to worry about seeming put-together for them!

I had my daughter and son with me when I had my 3rd .. they stayed thru the labor with me walked with me but when it was time to deliver I had them wait outside they were 6 and 4 at the time. Maybe that’s something you could consider, they waited outside the room with a family member and came back in after baby was out. I didn’t want the to see all the blood etc.
