When potty training did you go from diapers to

I know there are a lot of approaches when it comes to potty training & I’m learning a lot as a FTM... I honestly didn’t even know training underwear were a thing. I think (hope) we’ll be ready to transition out of underwear in the next week or so, but I’m not sure if I want to use training underwear or just regular underwear. I’m not a fan of pull-ups & know that’s not for us. 
Can someone whose used them tell me a little more about the training underwear? How absorbent? Do they feel wet so they know they had an accident? Can YOU tell right away if they had an accident?

Pull-ups were the biggest waste of money and training undies didn’t really absorb anything.  Straight to regular undies for us!

Where is your kid at in their self-help skills? How comfortable are they with pulling up and down pants, taking off their own diaper, etc. 
This is critical and often overlooked in potty training. Training underwear absorb a little bit of pee, so they give a kid who leaks a little pee a chance to notice, hold it, make it to the potty and still feel successful. Which is great. However, they are bulkier and harder to get on and off than regular underwear, so if your child struggles at all with getting their clothes off to go potty, the training undies will hurt more than help. 
I’m a preschool teacher with a class of 2-3 year olds so I pretty much live potty training. And the number one thing I tell parents is to dress your kid in loose clothes! Make it easy and just do sweatpants and loose leggings for a month or so while they figure it out. Undies that are a tiny bit big are better than ones that are too tight. 
For some kids, going commando at first is also a good option, just having one layer to worry about simplifies the process. For other kids, being commando is just too uncomfortable; they need underwear so seams and such don’t irritate their privates. And if a kid is very reward-motivated, big kid underwear is the best, most natural reward. (And in that instance, regular undies are more fun because you can get Moana or Paw Patrol or whatever your kid gets excited about; training undies are usually just pink or blue or white and very plain.)

We used all 3 but next time I’ll only use pull ups for sleep, training undies, then normal undies for awake. Pull ups feel exactly like diapers so she kept peeing in them like diapers. I think it slowed down the process

We used regular undies at home during the day but used pull ups for night time and if we left the house to go anywhere (like the store) so no accidents in the car.

I do a mix of all. 
I use pull-ups when we would drive for a long time or if I was somewhere where it was not quick to take them (church nursery since she would have to wait for me to come get her and then take her). I also use them for naps and bed time still. 
Regular underwear at home or at families houses. And training underwear if we were at friends houses and such. That was just for the first few weeks. Then as she got better at holding it in I would double up the underwear if we were going out for car rides to help catch the dribbles if it took to long to get the the washroom but she could feel the difference between underwear and pull-ups.

If you have the time to dedicate to potty training then I would get a few pairs of training underwear. They hold like 1 pee and they can tell they are wet. Regular underwear holds nothing, as we all know. We went to pull ups because she goes to daycare and they don’t have time for all the kids to be in regular underwear.
