Very high AFP result?

My doctor called yesterday with the result of our AFP blood test and my result was high. I didn’t realize quite how high until I started researching but our result is 5.4 and anything over 2.5 can point to neural tube defects or placental problems. She tried to keep reassuring me it’s just a screening test and not diagnostic but I can’t help but freak out. I’m 17 weeks and they’re moving up our anatomy scan but we don’t know when the hospital will be able to get us in. Worse still, she called Friday afternoon so my husband and I are just sitting with this information not knowing anything all weekend (and likely into next week). I’ve been crying and really down and can’t help but worry something is wrong with a number so high. Anyone have a similar experience with a high result and baby was fine? Guess I’m looking for any hope right now.

Ok litterly just went through the same exact thing my levels were soooo high compared to the normal range and they called me I cried and cried for days and then they scheduled my anatomy scan for 2 weeks out I just went today and then had a appointment at parintology (spelled that wrong) and she was testing super high for nueral tube defect we get into ultra sound then go see the specialist and everything was 100 percent perfect no issues she is great and healthy some women just produce a lot more afp then others which puts us in a “high risk category” I’m praying every thing is the same for u but I would definitely not stress anymore about the blood ago results haha I know that’s hard tho but you’ll get through it even if there correct it’s all for a reason good luck and prayers to u!!!💕💕

I wanted to update this post for anyone who searches AFP like I did when I was freaking out. So we had our level 2 ultrasound today (I’m 18 weeks exactly) and everything looks great! Our baby has no neural tube defects they could see, nor any other abnormalities pointing to my weirdly high AFP result. Even the placenta looked great. The only thing they can’t rule out for sure is a rare kidney disease that’s not often compatible with life but the doctor we met with doesn’t think that’s very likely. He offered an amnio but I don’t think we’ll be doing that based on the scan results. Since I did get this high risk result though, I will need more frequent monitoring to make sure baby is growing OK or I don’t develop pre eclampsia or other things high AFP could point to. Anyway, I’m feeling so much relief and I hope anyone reading this who goes through something similar finds comfort in this too. Thanks to everyone who shared their story!
