4 weeks preg- odd prenatal vitamin advice from doctor

Paige

Hi everyone!

I just found out yesterday I'm pregnant after a year of trying with my husband for our 1st child! We are so happy. I thought for sure I was out this month as I had no symptoms outside what I thought were just usual PMS, so I bought prenatal vitamins in the hopes it would give me some support in trying to get pregnant. I have not taken any yet as I found out less than 24 hours after buying them that I conceived. I just went to see my doctor this morning to confirm everything and she let me know what my next steps would be. First, I would just like to mention I am a canadian expat living in Barbados and not dealing with Canadian healthcare here, however, this doctor was referred to me by several friends on the island and I have seen her in the past without problems. She therefore knows that we have been trying for a year, and also that I suffer with low iron levels.

She said I would need to eat tons of dark green veg in order to maintain healthy iron levels. When I asked if I should start taking prenatal vitamins straight away (as I heard you are supposed to) she said no, it was way too early and I am not to start taking them until I am 3-4 months pregnant. Now I am terribly confused...I thought the first trimester was so important for developing a healthy baby and I can't understand why she would want me to skip over this period entirely without taking the vitamins? And if I am low in iron, would my body not require extra support? I eat plenty of greens already and my body is still low in iron. The only answer the doctor provided me with when I asked "why no prenatal vitamins?" Was that she wanted my body to het the nutrients it needs naturally. Huh???

My next appointment is in a month with the same doctor. Has ANYONE out there ever received similar advice? Did you follow it? Should I get a second opinion?

Right now, I am leaning towards getting a second opinion, which gets tricky when you live on a small, gossipy island and you are trying to keep a pregnancy a secret lol. But I know you all can't help me with that part lol.

Any advice would be so appreciated. I haven't got a clue, and of course, I want to do this the right way!

Thanks, and hope everyone has an amazing weekend 💕 baby dust to all TTC
