DO Women have a “ROLE”?

Question

I was talking to my boyfriend and we got in this heated argument. He seems to think that women have a role and men have a role in relationships. And by role he means women doing all the cooking, cleaning etc. 
I don’t like that 1950s style dating where men think all were supposed to be is pregnant and in the kitchen 🙄. Don’t get me wrong I don’t mind cooking and cleaning but not because my man expects me too. 
 What are your thoughts?

These are the same men that are broke and bring absolutely nothing to a relationship. I’d ask more questions and see what else he thinks, doesn’t sound like husband material.

I think the two people in the relationship defines what roles they play. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with gender roles but before all of that, you have to know that the ultimate reason you’re together is to be a TEAM.  You don’t get with a man so that he takes out the garbage and cuts the grass, it’s that you two are supposed to work as a team.  
When I got married, I told my husband that I don’t do alot of cooking and we’d have to share that task. And I wasn’t gonna be the only one cooking and cleaning and taking care off the kids. He agreed. He knew how to do all that stuff anyway so it’s not like I had to teach him. Those are things we never once argued about and our marriage was tumultuous to say the least. 
If he was a woman that wants to have that life, let him go find her if it’s not what you want. You can easily find a man willing to share responsibilities with you.

I am the odd one out but I want that role. I want nothing else. I can't wait for the day I can quit the workforce and stay home and fulfill that role. I think women should want to be a helper to their man( not a weak sidekickbut a strong military type of a helper). I would support any daughter of mine what wanted to do something else.
I think each relationship has to make thier own definition of that role. If you can't agree on what the roles will be don't stay in that relationship. He is NOT wrong for wanting his wife to be that kind of woman BUT you don't have to be HIS wife.

Yeah I told my (now) husband that if that’s what he expected from me then to let me know cause I was not gonna stay 👎🏻 His mom does it. She cooks, cleans, serves only the men their plate of food. Even when she goes somewhere she has their plate already served 🙄 my BIL is so rude (it’s rude to me at least) that he told his mom he wants his plate served and warmed up when he gets home before he gets to the dinner table 😑😑😑 My BIL is very bossy with his mom and I don’t know why she puts up with it.

I would not be with someone like that.  I’m a sahm and my husband works 7 days a week. He still cleans and cooks.  Sure I do more as far as cleaning but I’m just home more.

I accidentally hit yes, meant to hit no.
There's something I've realized in my relationship, and I think it's part of why I often find myself unhappy (full disclosure, it's something my husband and I are working on, I'm just sharing to help prove a point). 
My husband works full time, and I take care of our kid during the day, and I work two nights a week and a few hours on Saturday while he is home with our son. During the day while I'm home, I do all the "mom" things for my son, as well as the expected "wife" things. I wash the dishes, do the laundry, clean the house, etc. Many days I find myself feeling burnt out. And I realized that if my husband and I were separated, my burden would be lighter, while his would be heavier. He would suddenly have to wash his own dishes, buy and prepare his own food, do his own laundry, and care for our child while I work in the evening. Meanwhile, I would have less laundry to do, less dishes, and one less person to feed. The bathroom wouldn't need cleaned as much, and I wouldn't be vacuuming as often (husband never takes his shoes off at the door 🙄). I would probably work a little more often, probably 4 weeknights instead of 2, and I'd work a full shift on Saturday instead of a half shift. But I like work, and due to custody agreement I would have actual guaranteed time to myself every now and again. 
You see, when men think that their only duty is to bring home the money, they wind up with a pretty easy setup, while women find themselves burnt out, especially if the woman also works. Men and women need to "carry their own weight" when it comes to relationships, because if being together means more chores for one person and less for another, you're not going to be happy. 
Men and women can have "roles" in relationships, but those roles need to be equal and agreed upon. Like you said, this isn't the 1950's. Roles aren't assigned anymore, they're agreed upon on a case by case basis, depending on what works for who.

I don’t think women have to have a role, but in my marriage it’s always been that way. My husband can grill just about everything, but put him in front of the stove and there’s no promises what’s going to happen. Not to mention he works about an hour further away than I do, so we wouldn’t eat until 9pm if I waited for him. He cleans a little here and there, but I’m really particular of the way i like to clean, and it relaxes me.. so I’d rather just do it. 
When it comes to our son... we are completely 50/50 though.
I think it just depends on what works for your particular relationship.
