URGENT PSA: Ditch Depo ASAP!

This is my public service announcement regarding Depo-Provera (the shot) birth control — I’m sharing because it is a very serious side effect that I only very recently learned of:

Prolonged use of Depo CAUSES BONE DENSITY PROBLEMS!!

I *loved* Depo!! No babies AND no period?! And I only have to think about it 4 times per year?!? Fucking miracle drug!!

I started using Depo when I was in high school after a pregnancy scare (I couldn’t manage to take my pill properly). I used Depo for approximately 16 years.

Over ALL that time and under the care of several doctors (all of whom had a complete and accurate medical history for me), no one ever impressed upon me the severity of the loss of bone density side effect.

Of course, they asked if I took a calcium supplement (which I did) — but, until very recently when I switched doctors, no doctor ever took the time to explain why a calcium supplement was so necessary.

Apparently, if Depo is your chosen method of birth control, it should be used for a MAXIMUM of 3 years. ...Not 16.

I am 33 years old and very probably have osteoporosis caused by extended use of Depo-Provera.

I’ve already suffered broken two bones from a simple fall. Worse still — my husband and I had just started to talk about starting a family... Based on the results of my bone density study, however, it may be unsafe for me to carry a child...

I’m now seeing an endocrinologist who wants to do a lot more tests... In the meantime, she has recommended various exercises to help strengthen my bones as well as a vitamin regimen. Only time will tell...

It may be too late for me — but I’m sharing my story here, on social media, and with all the women with whom I come into contact in hopes that I can help others avoid this!

None of my doctors ever told me, so I have to assume that other women out there are using Depo with no idea of the long-term damage it causes.

If you or anyone you know uses Depo for birth control — please seriously consider another option!
